What is the topic for my animation?

My aim is to explore the expression of Chinese aesthetics in motion. So, I selected the Chinese traditional woodblock prints as the main research object, specifically, taking Tantou woodblock print as the case study by having fieldwork to explore the characteristics and attributes of its arts and crafts.

I found there are gaps between old prints and modern prints when we explore or analyse their visual characteristics, such as forms, lines, designs, etc. I guess the cause reason is mainly because of the cultural gap and art educational training system between modern China and ancient China.

But We can solve this problem by training LoRa after composing a dataset for LoRa that is from various ancient printed books that can date several hundreds of years. So that It could distil its visual characteristics with strong Chinese aesthetics objectively but without the limitation of intrinsic knowledge within every single person.

We could find the topic of ancient books that contained visual information that could be used for training LoRA are mainly focused on the following areas: 1. medicine

  1. Kongfu

  2. mysterious things

  3. religion(Daoist,Buddism..)

  4. others, such as political contents

which arouses my interest in combining all of these enjoyable visual elements without going beyond my research scope: Chinese aesthetics.

I am fascinated by designs and animations that evoke a retro feel. The 1980s and 1990s before China's open policy, representing a vigorous era in modern China, hold a special place in my imagination, fueled by pictures and videos that capture that period. I also see similarities between ancient China and early modern China, particularly in how people envision the past. Traditional Chinese printed books serve as records that reflect modern interpretations of earlier eras.

Concerning with story of my animation. I think Qigong is the perfect topic for connecting the modern audience with ancient aesthetics to create a retro illusion feeling, which also is the natural blender that concludes with topics such as superstitious belief, religion, Kongfu, medicine, and cosmology, which are also popular topics in ancient printed books.

Besides, it is a part of the Chinese people's collective memory, we can call it a cultural phenomenon. it was a trend that was endorsed by famous people and authorities and was well-known for every family from the 80S to the '90s, which also caused some clownish and funny common events, such as Xinxi Pot. Lastly, This topic mixes people's imagination and is a suitable topic for creating funny animation.

So, To some degree, Qigong could be, as the idea of this animation story, a bridge to connect modern audiences with traditional Chinese aesthetics.
